Giantslayer - Critical Fail

From the GM - Events up to now 2.3
In the event anyone actually reads these things...

The group of misfits turned effective adventuring crew found the secret entrance to the Druidic Vault of Thorns. However, there were a number of unexpected encounters found within, with elements of the Feywild bleeding into the pocket dimension. Undeterred, the band found the cache of weapons stored within, and returned to the Keelboat relatively unscathed.

After a number of uneventful days traveling upstream, the captain reported that the  his ship would be unable to travel up the tributary branching towards their final destination, Redlake Fort. As such, the party trekked through the woods, and the wild-shapped Carroll scouted ahead alone. Though there was some unwanted interactions with the denizens of the fort, Carroll returned with valuable information, and the team discussed possible dam plans.

Unfortunately, the nonchalant conversation was overheard by a roving patrol. Unsurprisingly, a fight broke out, and all but one of the enemy party was slain. A lone orc surrendered after the Hill Giant leader was felled, and willingly answered questions in exchange for his life. It was decided that the captive orc could act as an intermediary to the Orc leader, in the hopes to benefit from the discontent between Orcs and Giants.

The meeting with General Karrguk didn't quite go as planned, as the night's entertainment would come first; a man (well…Dwarf) vs. bear (well, bears) contest. Not wanting to leave the Dwarf to defend himself with just a skillet, Yuki jumped (fell) into the bear run between the bears and their meal. The majority of the Giantslayer crew helped out, and though the dwarf was left bloody and unconscious, he did survive the fight. General Karrguk seemed pleased.

With a sick and unconscious crew, you scoured the ship for potential culprits. While cautiously moving through the ship's bilges, the party was set upon by a broken-hearted woman and her snake. Though the space was trapped, the assailant was brought down quickly, and presumed to be the perpetrator of a number of unfortunate events on this trip.

The crew did recover with time, but after finding a marker pointing the way to the Vault of Thorns, the boat was attacked by an orc raiding party. Based on a note on the leaders fresh corpse, it appears they were sent to specifically ambush the heroes of Trunau. With that bit of trouble out of the way, you departedelboat and Captain Raag and headed deep into the marsh. Along the way, you swifty fought off a massive hydra, and slew a seemingly crazed female dwarf.

More notably, you ran into a will-o'-the-wisp, that after some fighting and conversing revealed he was Mossbeard, a former Council of Thorns druid. Befriending him, Mossbeard provided directions to the wisp graveyard of his former compatriot, and entrance instructions to access the Vault.

The Keelboat

After successfully aiding the town with the orc assault, and earning the title "Giantslayer", the party enjoys a much rest. The halfling bard Ozymandias disappears into the night, as The Bleaching had begun to take hold. As Yuki is shunned by mysterious patron, her search for faith brings her closer to her god, and to the path of the Warpriest.

After a few days, Chief Defender Halgra summons the crew to the Ivory Hall, to discuss the counter-attack on Trunau's attackers. The Twisted Hearts are reportedly commanded by the hill giant Grenseldek, and Halgra believes that removing the metaphorical "head of the snake" will cause the rest of the combined clan to fall into disarray.  The party is asked to head to Redlake Fort downriver via a patchwork ship. The courageous adventurers agree (eventually), and meet the dwarf Carrrol, who was tasked with assisting them on the journey.

Though the Keelboat was constructed from multiple ships, it is seaworthy (river-worthy?) and the crew is experienced. Early into the first day, however, one of the crew is lost overboard, and the tone on the ship noticeably darkens. The next afternoon, a trio of river drakes attack, and absconds with one of the ship's workhorses. The team tracks the alpha down and successfully recovers the old horse. The hits keep coming as a partially-drugged Girallon breaks out of the ship's armory, but is quickly brought down.

As the Keelboat begins its long treak up the River Esk, what should have been a routine stop at the way station for the Castle Firrine becomes yet another battle to the death. A small band of orcs were wrapping up a successful raid, and through Yuki soaking some significant damage, the party again kills all who oppose them. Calrianne Blix, the knight on duty offers both her thanks, and an old map of Redlake Fort.

The trip up river comes to a sudden halt as an unexpected "darn" blocked passage. A clutch of large merrow, aquatic cousins of giants, had set an unsuccessful ambush for upstream or downstream traffic. After a few seconds, the surviving merrow fled back into the murk, allowing the "Giantslayers" to efficiently destroy the makeshift barricade.

The revelry based on the success of the night's work was swiftly dashed during dinner, as partway through his meal Captain Raag falls unconscious to the floor. The majority of the crew also shows signs of sudden illness. A meal most foul indeed…

Book 1 Done!

As the terror of the orcish assault on Trunau rages on, the rag-tag band of adventurers slug their way through a plethora of enemies, in order to light the remaining beacons and signal those outside the walls. No matter the obstacles, one by one the bonfires were kindled.

In addition to the waves of the Twisted Nail tribe encountered on the treacherous trek through the town, the team encountered a male human accompanied by half-orc woman, Urnsul, in an alley. While there is some suspicion as to her loyalties, she heads out of site before the party can question her further, and before they locate a recently deceased merchant at the end of said alley. After she later joins in against the party in a fearsome fight with a cave giant and his "handlers", our soon to be heroes quickly agree they don't care for her much. While the newly dubbed "Giantslayers" were victorious, the badly wounded Urnsul manages to slip away yet again.

After a not-so-brief respite in the burnt and shattered remains of Clamor, the 'slayers head into a newly excavated cave entrance. Inside, after eradicating some local fauna, they run face to face with the half-orc Skreed and his wolf pack. Pulling a note from his still-warm corpse, a note from Grenseldek ( self-titled "Glorious Chieftain of the Twisted Hearts") plainly states that Skreed is to locate a hammer and rock of Uskroth. Both are quickly found on the body of a very large skeleton in the middle of the room, surrounded by a bevy of smaller bones. Upon closer inspection of the rock, the geode appears to actually be one half of a map of the Mindspun Mountains and a trail to the "Giantkiller's Tomb".

Laden with victory spoils, the party heads back towards the exit of the cave. Who or what will be awaiting them on the other side?

Book 1, 75% done

After the funeral of Rodrick Grath, a sudden orc attack breaks the somber silence around the pyre. The adventurers have lit 2 of the remaining 3 town beacons, and after withstanding wave after wave of orc marauders (and a few brief moments of much-needed rest) they head towards the Hopespring Beacon.

What perils yet lie in wait…

Welcome to your campaign!
A blog for your campaign

Welcome to our 1st attempt at Paizo's Giantslayer!

So far, we've got a handful of fun-loving players and their created PCs. Session Zero (and 0.5) went well, as did our first actual gaming attempt.

Currently I only have basic info aboutt the city of Trunau and its residents, which can be seen under the Wiki tab. Michael is planning on uploading the gaming session reviews each week as well.

When you get the chance, add as least the basic stats of your character, so hopefully I (and the NPCs) don't continue to forget names…
